    Truck container crushes woman to death in Onitsha

    A yet-to-be-identified woman has been crushed to death by a 40ft container at Eze-Iweka area near Upper Iweka Bus Stop, Onitsha, Anambra State

    The container was said to have fell from a rolling trailer at the ever-busy Onitsha-Owerri Road.

    According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when the truck, parked by the roadside, suddenly rolled off while goods were being offloaded and trapped the victim standing by the road side.

    “While the truck was rolling, the 40ft container it was carrying fell and crushed the woman standing by the roadside, thereby trapping her on the ground.

    “More casualties would have been recorded if not that hawkers who saw the truck rolling quickly fled the scene,” one of the witnesses narrated.

    The Nation gathered that the deceased was still trapped under the container as at time of filing the report while rescue efforts were ongoing.

    Confirming the incident, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Adeoye Irelewuyi blamed the crash on brake failure.

    He sympathized with the deceased family, warning motorist to desist from disobeying traffic rules and regulations.

    He further emphasized regular maintenance of vehicle to minimum safety standard to avert future occurrences.

    He said, “An Unidentified driver of a commercial mark trailer today 19th October, 2023 at about 15:08hrs was involved in a road traffic crash.

    “One female adult involved was killed (trapped).

    “The FRSC rescue team from RS5.3A1 Upper- Iweka Outpost Anambra State rushed to the accident scene along with the Awada police team making efforts to get crane to lift the 40ft container were the road traffic crash victim was trapped.

    “Efforts are still in place to get the driver of the truck amidst the Awada police division who are also investigating for necessary actions.” (The Nation)

    Truck Falls On Passenger Bus, Kills Driver In Ogun

    A passenger bus driver lost his life on Sunday evening when a truck fell on the bus at Toll Gate on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

    Ogun Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Ahmed Umar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, Ogun, that the accident occurred at 5.20 p.m.

    Umar said that the truck with registration number LND 634 YE, coming from Lagos and heading toward Sango-Ota, fell on the yellow passenger bus marked FST 744 YD.

    The sector commander said that a male driver, who was the only occupant of the bus, died instantly.

    “The corpse of the victim has been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital, Ifo,” he said.

    He said that the two vehicles had been towed away from the road to ease traffic.

    Umar attributed the cause of the accident to reckless driving.

    He warned motorists to desist from dangerous driving to save lives.

    3 Injured As Train Hits Truck, Tricycle In Kano – FRSC

    The Kano Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Zubairu Mato, has confirmed that three persons were injured when a moving train hit an articulated vehicle and tricycle in Kano.

    Mato told journalists on Sunday in Kano that nobody died in the accident, adding that the driver of the articulated vehicle escaped unhurt.

    He said that the victims, who were inside a commuter-tricycle, were taken to a hospital in the city.

    The incident occured on Obasanjo Road in the metropolis.

    “There was no death but three persons, who sustained injuries, were taken to hospital by our personnel,” Mato said.

    An eyewitness, Aminu Abdullahi, said the incident happened when the articulated vehicle, loaded with cement, was coming towards the rail line as the train was speeding.

    Abdullahi said that some people attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver was not observant.

    He said, “When the articulated vehicle driver tried to cross the rail line, the train hit the vehicle and the tricycle at the same time.”

    He further said the victims were “rushed to the hospital unconscious”. (NAN)

    Mother, Two Daughters Die In Boxing Day Crash

    A Sunday auto crash at Itako, Ijebu-Ife in Ogun State, claimed the lives of a woman and her two daughters.

    A truck and a Ford SUV were involved in the accident.

    Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesman of Ogun State’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, confirmed the incident to journalists in Abeokuta.

    He said the accident occurred at 12:30 p.m. and was caused by excessive speeding by the driver of the Ford SUV who sped into the truck.

    He said only one of the four persons involved in the accident survived.

    “The Ford SUV was on its way from Lagos and heading towards the eastern part of the country when it rammed into a stationary Dangote articulated vehicle having lost control of the vehicle.

    “The husband of the woman stays overseas and the driver was employed as the family driver. The driver is in police custody.

    Akinbiyi said also that FRSC operatives deposited the corpses at the morgue of Goshen Hospital, Ijebu-Ife while the vehicles involved in the accident were taken to Ijebu Ife Divisional Police Station.

    He commiserated with the family of the deceased, advising drivers to avoid excessive speeding and dangerous driving particularly during the harmattan season. (NAN)

    Truck Crushes FRSC Official To Death In Ogun

    An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has been crushed to death by a truck at Sagamu-Ijebu Ode Road in Ogun, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    Mr. Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander, confirmed the incident to NAN in Abeokuta on Wednesday, saying that the accident occurred on Monday.

    Umar added that it was caused by the carelessness and excessive speeding by the truck driver.

    “It was carelessness on the part of the driver, he was on high speed, he lost control and hit the officer.

    “As officers were standing by our patrol vehicle, a flat-body trailer hit the officer and brush him in between the truck and the patrol vehicle. The officer died while another marshal got injured,” he said.

    The sector commander explained that the truck driver did not stop after hitting the officers but was chased by motorists and motorcycle riders who witnessed the incident.

    “They pursued him, he stopped, left the vehicle and ran away but was arrested and we have handed him over to the police,” he said.

    He noted that the injured marshal is in the hospital receiving treatment. (NAN)

    Speeding Truck Driver Kills Motorcyclist In Anambra- FRSC  

     A speeding truck driver on Thursday killed a motorcycle operator on Igbo Ukwu-Uga Road in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra.

    Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka.

    Irelewuyi said the accident, which occurred at about 5.10 p.m., was caused by speeding and lost of control.

    “The crash involved an unidentified driver of a red Mack Tipper with registration Number: JJ496QF and an unidentified rider of a Lifan motorcycle with no registration number.

    “Witness report indicates that the driver of the tipper was on top speed; he lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the oncoming motorcycle in a single carriage way and crashed.

    “Three male adults were involved in the crash. The victims were taken to Apex Hospital, Ngo in Igbo Ukwu, where the motorcycle operator was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

    “His corpse has been deposited at the hospital’s morgue,” he said.

    The sector commander condoled with the family of the dead victim and warned motorists to desist from speeding and maintain a safe speed limit.(NAN)

    LASTMA Denies Involvement In Ojodu Truck Accident

    The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has said that its officials were not involved in the unfortunate truck accident that crushed some students on their way home from school in Ojodu on Tuesday.

    The LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos.

    Oreagba averred that from the reports he received on the incidence, the driver was believed to have lost control of the vehicle, probably because of mechanical reasons.

    He, however, said the police was investigating the matter and the public should await their report.

    Oreagba said LASTMA does not have a traffic management duty post around the accident scene.

    He said: “So all patrol personnel had reported back to base for daily parade as at the time the accident occurred leaving only those at their traffic management posts.

    “It is important to note that various unconfirmed reports in some media, not only LASTMA as an agency was fingered but some other government traffic control agencies.

    “So, I wondered how all these agencies would be in pursuit of one truck, a truck that could be apprehended at a later date, that is, if it had committed any traffic infraction,” Oreagba said.

    He advised that the media should refrain from rushing to the press with unsubstantiated reports, all in a bid to be the first to break the news that could engender public distrust before the revelation of the facts.

    Oreagba commiserated with the families of the students that lost their lives and prayed for the quick recovery for the injured.

    He said that everyone had the responsibility of making the roads safe by strictly adhering to all motoring and traffic rules and regulations that have been put in place. (NAN)

    Two Students Killed, 12 Injured In Lagos Truck Accident – Police

    The Lagos State Police Command has said two students of Bab Fafunwa Millennium School, in Ojodu, Lagos, were killed when a DAF truck driver, Bolaji Kabiru, rammed into some pedestrians on Tuesday afternoon.

    Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, disclosed this in a statement titled, ‘Fatal Motor/Pedestrians Accident At Ojodu Involving Students’.

    The statement read in part, “As a result of the accident, two males died on the spot, seven females and five males totalling twelve victims sustained varying degrees of injuries.

    “Traffic personnel from the Motor Traffic Department of the Ojodu Police Division immediately visited the scene. Corpses of the dead students (identity not yet known) were evacuated with the support of officers of the FRSC and were deposited at the Morgue of the Mainland Hospital, Yaba, for autopsy.

    “The injured victims were taken to God’s Apple City Hospital, Ojodu Berger; St. Michael Hospital, Ojodu; and the Lagos State Emergency Hospital, Toll Gate.”

    The police spokesperson said the erring driver has been apprehended and kept in police custody, adding that some angry students, joined by hoodlums, set the vehicle ablaze.

    “They also attacked the Ojodu Police Station in their large number, demanding the release of the driver for jungle justice.

    “However, when their demand was not met, they became violent. In the process, they destroyed four vehicles parked in the premises of the police station and another mobile truck on the highway.

    “To avoid total breakdown of law and order, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, immediately ordered the deployment of policemen comprising tactical teams, Rapid Response Squad and others to the scene to maintain law and order.

    “The protesters were professionally dispersed with minimum force without resulting to any further injury,” Ajisebutu added.

    The PPRO said the CP commiserated with the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in the fatal motor accident and appealed to sympathisers and other members of the public to allow the police carry out a thorough investigation, and avoid seeking self-help.

    Many Feared Dead As Truck Rams Into Students In Lagos

    Many students are feared dead in the Ojodu area of Lagos State after a truck ran into them on Tuesday afternoon.

    The accident happened along Isheri Road, just before the Ojodu Police Station.
    An eyewitness said the accident which occurred at about 3:00 pm claimed the lives of over 10 students with others injured from the scene.

    The victims, according to the eyewitness, are students of Ojodu Grammar School.

    Another account claimed that “15 students are dead already and still counting” even though official casualty figures have not been announced by security and emergency officials.

    While the cause of the accident is yet to be known, Eons Intelligence, an emergency alert provider, said “reports indicate that activities of Road safety & VIO led to an articulated vehicle losing control, killing several schoolchildren, injured others in Ojodu Berger Lagos, axis.”

    Some video footage from the scene showed a crowd of people who have taken over the road extending to the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in protest of the loss of student lives.

    Eons Intelligence warns that the “area is volatile with personnel from RRS using tear gas to disperse people. Avoid the area.”

    Reports said some students have attacked and destroyed trucks and vehicles belonging to the VIO office in the area.

    Truck Driver Destroys NPA e-Call-up Facility – Official

    The Truck Transit Parks (TTP) Ltd., owners of Eto, the electronic call-up system for truck, says that a truck driver destroyed one of the barriers for the system.

    This is contained in a statement signed by Ms Toni Anne Uwaifo, Corporate Communications Manager, Trucks Transit Parks Ltd., on Tuesday in Lagos.

    Uwaifo said a truck driver deliberately rammed into the access barrier at the Abuja exit gate of Tincan Island port.

    She added that the driver claimed his brakes failed.

    “However, in the video after the accident, he is clearly seen driving the truck steadily and in control.

    “Another interesting fact from the video is that this truck driver approached the barrier from the side of the barrier, not in front or from behind, he drove from the side, a rather awkward angle.

    “Interestingly, the truck did not proceed toward the concrete fence just beyond the barrier, a fact that will be evident if it is indeed a case of failed braking system.

    “The driver was just trying to sabotage the Eto system,” she said.

    Uwaifo said that what was gathered from a TTP staff on ground at the exit gate was that previously, several touts had been threatening to pull down the barrier.

    She said that the aim was to carry their illegal activities of entry and exit into the ports without Eto call-up if they were able to pull down the barrier.

    She noted that the truck driver had been apprehended and handed over to the police.

    “The open sabotage of the call-up system is a sad development and a stark reminder of how rife corruption is in our society.

    “The TTP will continue to sensitise the public on why the electronic call-up system is a viable solution for tackling the Apapa gridlock,” she said.

    Uwaifo noted that the electronic truck call-up system, known as Eto was introduced by NPA in February, to manage the movement of trucks around the port corridors in Apapa.

    She added that prior to the deployment of this system, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and TTP, carried out sensitisation campaign in October 2020 on how the system works.

    “The campaign also is to sensitise on how it will create more opportunities for truck transporters and ultimately improve Nigeria’s economy,” she said. (NAN)

    Night Travelling Now Unsafe For Motorists, Commuters – FRSC

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says night travelling is unsafe for motorists and commuters, especially now that most roads are in a deplorable state and insecurity on the increase.

    The FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi, Mr. Solomon Agure, made the assertions in a statement on Monday in Lokoja.

    Agure said that no good road experience could come out of speeding, overloading, use of phone while driving, use of mechanically deficient vehicles, failure to use seatbelt and safety crash helmet.

    He urged motorists to avoid running foul of traffic rules to avoid crashes.

    According to him, drivers should guide against violating the stated infractions and other anti-safety vices.

    He said that the corps would be on the look out to enforce strict compliance to safety laws and orders on the highways.

    Agure said arrangements had been made for the commencement of 2021’s Ember Months and Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Campaign in Kogi.

    He said that the campaign would be carried out under the theme: “Maintain Safe Speed, Avoid Night Travels And Enjoy Quality Road Experience.”

    Agure said there would be high visibility of the corps on the roads across the state toward achieving the goals of the operation from now till middle of January, 2022.

    He said that the command was planning to deploy over 800 personnel, 20 patrol vehicles, four ambulances and heavy tow trucks for control of traffic.

    “It aims at ensuring route lining, clear obstruction and respond to distress calls for all to have maximum road use experience during and after the period,” he said. (NAN)

    2 Die In Pile-Up On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

    The Ogun Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said that two people lost their lives on Saturday in a three-vehicle pile-up around AP Petrol Station on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

    The State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr. Ahmed Umar, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, Ogun, said that one other person sustained injuries in the accident.

    Umar explained that the accident, which involved five people and three vehicles, happened at about 6.40 a.m.

    He said that one of the vehicles got trapped in a heap of granite spilled on a section of the road by a truck, and that the two other vehicles ran into the trapped vehicle, resulting in multiple collisions.

    He said the vehicles involved in the accident were a grey Volkswagen car with registration number GWA 114 BC, a silver Hyundai Sonata car, marked RBC 108 AE, and a grey Mercedes Benz car, marked BDG 757 GF.

    “The corpses of the victims had been deposited at Idera Hospital, Sagamu, while the survivor is also receiving treatment in same hospital, “he said.

    Umaru, who blamed the accident on over-speeding, advised motorists to refrain from the act and always exercise patience to avert road mishaps. (NAN)

    6 killed, 54 Injured In Bauchi Road Crash — FRSC

    The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Bauchi State, Mr. Yusuf Abdullahi, on Wednesday said six people lost their lives while 54  sustained injuries in a road crash in the state.

    Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi that the accident involved traders traveling from Darazo town in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State to Dakuku Market in Gombe state.

    Abdullahi said that dangerous overtaking was the probable cause of the crash involving commercial Mercedes Benz truck with 72 male passengers.

    “It was a lone fatal accident which involved a Mercedes Benz truck with a plate number AA476MSA conveying 72 traders from Darazo LGA of Bauchi state to Dakuku Market in Gombe state.

    “Six people lost their lives on the spot while 54 sustained injuries. The name of the driver is one Alhaji Sa’idu Misau and the probable cause of the accident is dangerous overtaking.

    “The truck veered off the road and threw the people away. Some were hung on the truck. It took us hours to carry out the rescue operation,” he said

    The Sector Commander further explained that the injured victims had been taken to Darazo General Hospital for medical attention while the corpses of the deceased were  deposited in the mortuary of the same hospital.

    He cautioned all road users, especially drivers, to be wary of speeding and dangerous overtaking.

    Abdullahi added that the corps would not relent in its determination to sensitise road users on safe driving and the need to comply with traffic rules and regulations. (NAN)
