    Court Sentences Jihadist leader To death

    A Malian jihadist leader of the Katiba of Ansar dine du Sud, Souleymane Keita, and two other men, all accused of terrorism, were sentenced to death on Friday by the Bamako Court of Assizes, according to judicial source.

    A dozen men were also sentenced to death in absentia.

    They are accused of preaching jihad in southern Mali and on the border between Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso.

    During the trial, Keita acknowledged the facts and expressed no regret for his actions. “I do not regret anything because our fight is against the secularism of the Malian state. If I have the possibility, I will start again,” he said bluntly.

    “I am not a terrorist; I am leading the jihad at the border between Mali, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire, in the name of Ansar Dine,” he said.

    Concerning his links with his accomplices, Souleymane explained that he had approached them to mount “large-scale operations.”

    His two accomplices, Boubacar Sawadogo, 51, and Moussa Maïga, 33, belong to the branch of Ansar Dine in Burkina Faso, their country of origin, he explained.

    Keita, in his 60s, was accused of having, since 2012, fought in Konna, in the region of Mopti, in central Mali, attacked and ransacked the military camp of Misséni and the town of Fakola, in the region of Sikasso, southern Mali.

    Fighting alongside the Tuareg jihadist Malian leader, Iyad Ag Ghaly, in northern Mali, at the very beginning of the independence and Islamist rebellions in 2012, Souleymane created, after the French military intervention in January 2013, his Katiba, which is financially supported by Ansar Dine in the South, his home area.

    Gunmen Abduct Lecturer, 2 Children At Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria

    Gunmen abducted a lecturer and two children of a member of staff of the Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic Zaria, Kaduna State, on Saturday.

    The Secretary, Information and Protocol Unit of the polytechnic, Mr. Abdullahi Shehu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview on Sunday that the victims were abducted from their homes located within the institution.

    He said that the father of the two abducted children was injured by the gunmen and was receiving treatment at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria.

    Shehu said the kidnapped lecturer teaches at the School of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Electronics of the polytechnic.

    Spokesman of Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the incident and said police operatives had been deployed to secure the area, track the perpetrators and rescue the victims.

    Boko Haram: 700 Ex-military Personnel’s Limbs Amputated — Commission

    The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) says it has integrated about 700 ex-military personnel, who had their limbs amputated and eventually dismissed from the service as a result of Boko Haram insurgency.

    It also said there are about 31.5 million Nigerians living with disabilities and the number keeps increasing.

    The Executive Secretary of the Commission, James Lalu, stated this on Thursday when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Special Duties to defend his agency’s 2021 budget.

    He, however, appealed for an upward review of the commission’s budget to meet with the increasing demand of its capital budget.

    “Recently, we have to integrate about seven hundred ex-military personnel who had their limbs amputated and eventually dismissed from the service due to the Boko Haram insurgency. We have to provide artificial limbs for them to ensure they are reintegrated back to the society and live a normal life,” he said.

    Lalu noted that disability has become a developmental issue that needs to be properly tackled.

    He warned that failure to address this issue will place serious burden on the government.

    The Executive Secretary said the budget increase would take care of education, healthcare and livelihood of people with disabilities.

    He noted that a lot of disabled persons take to begging on the street when they cannot meet with their basic needs.

    Lalu also disclosed that the commission intends to set up zonal, states and local government offices to reach out to all its members living in the rural areas.

    Responding, the chairman of the committee, Senator James Lalu, (APC, Taraba), urged the commission to create a database of all its members across the country and design empowerment training for them especially those in the rural areas for a positive impact.

    Expose, Prosecute Sponsors Of Boko Haram, Sen. Ndume Tells FG

    The Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, APC, Borno South,  has called on the federal government to fish out those sponsoring the Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria for immediate prosecution.

    He also wants the Nigerian Army to stop granting amnesty to repentant Boko Haram terrorists who have engaged in massive killing and wanton destruction of properties.

    Ndume, who spoke with journalists on Wednesday, in Abuja, shorty after the closed door meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, for the defence of 2021 budget proposals, urged the federal government to emulate the United Arab Emirate which he said did a good job by jailing those sponsoring Boko Haram.

    Recall that the UAE recently jailed six Nigerians for financing Boko Haram terrorists. It also revealed that the jailed Nigerians had two accomplices in Nigeria one of whom is a government official.

    Ndume lamented that the pace of prosecuting the terrorists in Nigeria was too slow.

    His words:  “We are very grateful to the government of UAE and we are still appealing to our government to bring those directly or indirectly involved in Boko Haram activities to book immediately.

    “We disagree with the idea of deradicalisation and reintegration of purported Boko Haram terrorists. The position of the executive is different. We still maintain that you can’t be pampering people while their victims are still suffering in IDP camps.

    “We are still calling on the Nigerian government that those that are directly or indirectly involved in Boko Haram activities should be brought to book and used as an example. I think we have not been up and doing on that.

    “I am in disagreement with the government on the issue of deradicalising and reintegrating (Boko Haram repentants). I still maintain that you can’t be resettling people, pampering them while the war is on.  The committee and I believe many Nigerians are on the same page on this.”

    He recounted how a supposedly repentant Boko Haram member was fingered in the ambush that led to the death of the Commander of 25 Task Force Brigade in Damboa, Borno State, Col. D.C. Bako, in September this year.

    For him, the magnitude of atrocities committed by the terrorists, does not qualify them for amnesty.

    Ndume further went down memory lane to recall that in his village alone, 75 elderly Ulamas were murdered in one instance by the terrorists in 2015.

    “They can be kept as prisoners of war. After that, you profile them and charge those that are supposed to be charged to court and those that are victims of Boko Haram that were forcibly conscripted should be released,’’ he said.

    Army Declares Shekau, Al-Barnawi, 84 Other Boko Haram Terrorists Wanted

    The Nigerian Army has declared two factional leaders of Boko Haram terrorists, Abubakar Shekau and Maman Al-Barnawi, and 84 other Boko Haram terrorists wanted.

    The Commandant, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Farouk Yahaya, declared them wanted during the indoctrination of members of the civilian joint task force into the operations of Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri on Wednesday.

    The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Yusuf Buratai, while inaugurating the team, explained that the CJTF was drafted into the counter insurgency fight due to their superior knowledge of the terrain.

    “Identifying the enclaves of the terrorists as they move from one location to another is useful. The counter insurgency fight should not be left to the military alone,” he stated.

    Also speaking at the event, Governor, Babagana Zulum of Borno State, called on Boko Haram terrorists to drop their weapons and embrace the peace process being initiated by the government.

    Nigeria Receives 2 Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles To Fight Terrorists

    Nigeria has joined China and United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the only countries operating the WingLoong II Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV).
    In addition to the two inducted into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), six other UCAVs are expected by early 2021.

    The two WingLoong II can remain airborne for 31 hours in internal security reconnaissance (ISR) mode and 26 hours in offensive role.

    NAF Spokesperson, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said in a statement on Tuesday that the aircraft will add significant value to the nation’s counter-insurgency and anti-banditry operations.

    Daramola said that in the last five years, 22 new aircraft have been acquired by the Air Force while 19 more are expected before June 2021.

    According to the NAF Spokesperson, “close to 200 NAF pilots, engineers and technicians are undergoing training in nine different countries as part of efforts to bridge decades of gaps in capability and capacity that have made Nigeria vulnerable to asymmetrical threats.

    “These additional new air assets and skills acquired by personnel will greatly enhance Nigerian Air Force’s operational effectiveness which will translate into security for Nigeria and Nigerians.”

    Troops Eliminate 8 Terrorists, Rescue Victims In North East

    The Defence Headquarters says the troops of “Operation Fire Ball” have eliminated eight terrorists of Boko Haram and Islamic States West Africa Province (ISWAP) in recent encounters in the North East.

    The Acting Director, Defence Media Operations, Brig.Gen. Benard Onyeuko, in a statement on Tuesday, said that “Operation Fire Ball” was a subsidiary operation under “Operation Lafiya Dole.”

    Onyeuko added that the troops also rescued a woman and three children and also recovered large cache of arms during the encounter across the theatre of operation.

    He disclosed that the troops had between Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 thwarted attempt by Boko Haram/ISWAP to infiltrate Buni Gari town in Yobe and eliminated five of the insurgents.

    According to him, troop recovered one fabricated (VBL) Armoured Personnel Carrier, one Gun Truck, one NSVT Anti Aircraft Gun, one QJC Anti Aircraft Gun, one Rocket Propelled Grenade Tube, one PKT gun, one GPMG, one QJC Extra Barrel, six AK47 rifles, 311 rounds of 7.62mm NATO Ammunition from the encounter.

    Onyeuko also disclosed that troops of 151 Task Force Battalion deployed at Miyanti in Bama Local Government Area of Borno, destroyed terrorists’ hideout and rescued one woman and three children on Nov. 8.

    He added that two bicycles and other items were recovered from the fleeing insurgents.

    According to him, on Nov. 3, troops of Army Super Camp 7 deployed in Bama, successfully thwarted a suicide bombing attempt on their camp.

    “The vigilant troops sighted and neutralized the lone female suicide bomber before she could detonate her vest.

    “In another development, troops of Army Super Camp 11 deployed at Gamboru on Nov. 3, killed Boko Haram terrorists and forced others to flee with possible gunshot wounds.

    “Resulting from the encounter, the troops captured one AK 47 Rifle and 2 Boko Haram terrorists flags,” he said.

    The military spokesperson commended the troops for their resilience, doggedness and commitment to the war against insurgents in the North East and urged them to continue to build on the successes.

    He also assured the people of the determination of the military to finally rout out the remnants of the Boko Haram Terrorists /ISWAP terrorists from their enclaves.

    Recall that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Tukur Buratai, had said the launching of “Operation Fireball,” is the final onslaught against Boko Haram insurgency.

    He said the new operation would be extended to insurgents’ hideouts of Sambisa Forest, Mandara Mountains and the Lake Chad region.

    Troops Eliminate Terrorists, Destroy Gun Trucks, Recover Arms

    The troops of Operation Fire Ball have inflicted heavy casualty on Boko Haram/Islamic States for West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists killing 16 in recent encounters in North-East theatre of operation.
    The Acting Director, Defence Media Operations, Brig.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko, in a statement on Sunday, said that operation was a subsidiary operation launched under Operation Lafiya Dole to route out remnant of terrorists.

    Onyeuko said that four terrorists’ gun trucks were destroyed as well as recovery of large cache of arms and ammunitions during the various encounters.

    He disclosed that the troops had on Oct. 21 noticed unusual vehicles tailing the convoy of vehicles conveying Internally Displaced Persons from Maiduguri Cosmopolitan City to Baga town in order to infiltrate their position.

    According to him, the troops inflicted heavy casualty on them by killing three terrorists and destroyed one Gun Truck.

    He added that one Anti-Aircraft Gun, three AK47 Rifle, three Shells for making Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) were also captured, adding that the troops had since dominated the area with aggressive patrols.

    Onyeuko also disclosed that troops of Army Super Camp Magumeri also killed 11 in a fierce encounter and captured three gun trucks with three Anti Aircraft guns and one Dushka gun.

    He said the troops of Army Super Camp located at Mallam Fatori also routed elements of Boko Haram/ ISWAP terrorists who attacked their location on Saturday.

    According to him, after the fierce battle two terrorists were neutralised while others escaped with gunshot wounds as traces of blood of dragged casualties by the criminals were seen during exploitation.

    “The troops captured three AK47 rifles, one Light Machine Gun, 466 Rounds of 7.62x54mm ammunition, 24 rounds of 7.62x51mm ammunition and One Tecno cell phone.

    He said that the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole are in high spirit and dominating their Area of Responsibilities with robust fighting patrols.

    “The troops are hereby commended for the resilience, doggedness and commitment exhibited during the above encounters. They are equally encouraged not to rest on their oars but build on the successes recorded.

    “The entire populace of the North East zone are hereby assured of the determination of the High Command of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to finally rout out the remnants of the BHT/ISWAP criminals from their enclaves,” he said. (NAN)

    FG Obtains Court Order to Proscribe Shi’ites’ Movement, Declare it Terrorist Group

    The Federal Government has obtained a court order to proscribe the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, otherwise known as Shiites’.

    The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ordered the proscription of the movement following series of protests in Abuja by the group.

    According to the PUNCH Newspapers, Justice Nkeonye Maha issued the order in a ruling in which she also designated the activities of the Shiite’ organisation in any part of Nigeria “as acts of terrorism and illegality.”

    The court restrained “any person or group of persons” from participating in any form of activities involving or concerning the IMN “under any name or platform” in Nigeria.

    To complete the process of the proscription of the group, the court ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation “to publish the order proscribing the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in the official gazette and two national dailies.”

    The judge gave the order following an ex parte application by the Federal Government.
    A Copy of the ex parte application marked FHC/ABJ/CS/876/2019 which was sighted by Newspaper on Friday, was filed in the name of the ‘Attorney-General of the Federation.’

    Justice Maha granted the four prayers contained in the application shortly after the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata, argued the application on Friday.

    The IMN was the sole respondent to the application but the group was not represented by a lawyer on Friday since it was an ex parte hearing.

    Ruling on Friday, the court made “a declaration that the activities of the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in any part of Nigeria amounts to acts of terrorism and illegality.”

    The court said, “An order of this honourable court proscribing the existence and activities of the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in any part of Nigeria, under whatever form or guise either in groups or as individuals by whatever names they are called.

    “An order restraining any person or group of persons from participating in any manner whatsoever in any form of activities involving or concerning the prosecution of the collective intention or otherwise of the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) under any other name or platform howsoever called or described in any part of Nigeria.

    “An order directing the applicant (the AGF) to publish the order proscribing the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in the official gazette and two national dailies.”

    The Federal Government had filed the application before the court on Thursday, barely 72 hours after a protest by members of the group in Abuja led to a bloody clash between them and the police.

    A Deputy Commissioner of Police in the FCT, DCP Usman Musa, a Corps member serving with Channels Television, Precious Owolabi and some members of the group died in course of the protest.

    The Shi’ites have been protesting the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky despite several court orders granting him bail.

    El-Zakzaky, who is facing trial for culpable homicide and breach of peace among others, has been in detention since 2015.

    The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has called on the Federal Government to rethink its policy of releasing ‘repentant’ terrorists.

    According to him, it was wishful thinking for the government to believe it can de-radicalise such terrorists within a short time.

    Abubakar noted that it was not a coincidence that terrorist activities increase following the release of such detainees.

    Lamenting the rise in terrorists’ activities in the Middle Belt and the North East, he called for increased funding for the military to equip and boost their morale.

    In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by Abubakar, he declared that “It is unacceptable that terrorists and criminals are frequently better equipped than members of our armed forces,” insisting it was “the duty of the political elite to put aside any political differences and take a United stand to put an end to this.”

    The Presidential candidate stated that the increasing death of servicemen at the hand of terrorists and criminals, especially in the Northeast and Middle Belt, was “a clear sign that our troops need to be better funded and better equipped. It is true that funds are scarce, but this is an emergency and if we do not take care of an emergency, it becomes a crisis which can lead to a total breakdown of law and order – anarchy in essence.”

    The statement read further: “I have been traveling all over Nigeria and I meet with both Muslim and Christian clerics who tell me that in the North-East and Middle Belt, they now officiate over more funerals than they do marriages and child dedications. This is heartbreaking and we must do something immediately to change the situation.

    “Apart from funding, I advise the Federal Government to review its policy of releasing so-called ‘repentant’ terrorists. To think that the government can de-radicalise these individuals in so short a time is wishful thinking. Many people, myself included, think that the upsurge in terror activities coming after the release of such detainees, is not coincidental.

    “Finally, I urge the National Assembly to suo moto, take action to appropriate funds for our military on a fast-track basis. These are desperate times for Nigeria and desperate times call for dedication to duty of all concerned.

    “I am tired of issuing condolences for unnecessary deaths. I prefer to make a difference and prevent unnecessary deaths amongst the gallant men and women of our armed forces and the civilian population they took an oath to protect.”

    Operation Green Sweep: NAF destroys Boko Haram camp in Borno

    The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, says Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation Lafiya Dole has destroyed a Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) Camp at Buk along the Ajigin-Talala-Buk axis near Alagarno forest in Borno.

    Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, announced this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

    According to Daramola the operation was carried out on Wednesday.

    “The operation was conducted after intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions led to the discovery of a new camp with structures hidden under the thick vegetation, including a suspected BHT Tactical Command and Control (C2) Centre.

    “Accordingly, an Alpha Jet aircraft and two Mi-35 attack helicopters were detailed to attack the camp, inflicting significant damage to the C2 Centre,” he said.

    The spokesman said the NAF, working in concert with surface forces, would sustain the tempo of operations with a view to destroying all remnants of the terrorists in Borno.

    The NAF through the ATF on Wednesday commenced “Operation Green Sweep” “an air Interdiction” targeting selected BHT locations within the fringes of Lake Chad as well as areas around the Alagarno Forest near Sambisa in Borno.

    The NAF said the operation is aimed at further degrading the remnants of the terrorists, curtailing their freedom of action and denying them bases from which they could launch attacks.

    Buhari assures freedom for all Nigerians held by terrorists

    President Muhammadu Buhari, on Saturday reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that  all Nigerians abducted by terrorists are freed.
    He made the statement at the Passing Out Parade (POP) of 365 cadets of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna.
    In his address, Buhari, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo further disclosed that the federal government was working with states and international community, NGOs and Civil Society Organizations to ensure freedom for the captives.
     “We are committed to ensuring the release of all the women and men held in captivity.
    “Few days ago, Mr. president spoke personally to the anguished mother of Leah Sharibu; Christian girl who is the only one left as part of the Dapchi girls still in Boko Haram captivity.
    “Mr. President assured her mother that she would be returned home safe.
    “And that commitment Mr. president has made, is not just to her mother, but to also all the girls and young men who are still in Boko Haram captivity.
    “Today, all over the Northeast, our people are being provided with a chance to begin the urgent task of rebuilding their lives and livelihood,” he said.
    He commended the resilience of the Armed forces and the progress so far recorded in the fight against insurgency adding that, “The ongoing military stabilization operation in the Northeast will continue until full normalcy is restored.”
    The President further said: “Today residents of northeast are able to celebrate their religious festivals without the blanket of fear that once kept them permanently indoors.
    “Schools, markets and roads are being reopened daily, farmers are returning to their farms of which they are forced to flee.”
    According to him, in the last two years more than a million displaced persons have been reunited with their loved ones.
    “Over a hundred of our kidnapped girls from Chibok have regained their freedom after two years in captivity, while the plight of the Dapchi girls was promptly dealt with.
    “This is in addition of captives who have been rescued through special military operations.
    “We are not yet out of the woods of course but the progress we have seen embolden us to continue the fight.”
    Buhari reassured the Armed Forces that the government would look into their welfare, especially those deployed to conflict areas even as he warned that the administration would not condone any form of criminality.
    According to him,  “those who take the law into their  hands, bear illegal arms and seek to profit from insecurity, would be decisively dealt with.
    “That remains our promise to people of this nation who elected us into power.
    “The peace and stability of our dear country will continue to be of utmost priority.
    “Today’s graduating cadets will be taking their place in the military that is on the rise, tested and determined to take its place among the powerful military in the world.
    “A successful completion of a rigorous and demanding course no doubt imbues you, the graduating cadets, with sense of accomplishments. You must maintain that spirit of accomplishment.
    “As you prepare to face the task ahead of you, we all have very high expectations of you, that you and your senior colleagues will greatly contribute your quota to the sustenance of our national security and protection of national integrity of Nigeria,” the President  said.
    He was the reviewing officer at the parade.

    Why high profile terrorist, 3 others surrender – Army

    A high profile Boko Haram terrorist, Konto Fanami, and three other repentant terrorists have surrendered to the Nigerian Army on Monday.

    Army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, announced this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

    Usman said that the four repentant terrorists willingly deserted their hideouts and surrendered themselves to 120 Task Force Battalion at Goniri in Borno.

    He described Fanami as the Ameer (leader) of “Kafa hideout of the Boko Haram terrorists group that operates on Ajigin-Talala-Mungusum axis.’’

    “During preliminary interrogation, they confirmed that they abandoned the terrorism because of incessant hardship and realising that they were misled by their terrorist group leaders.

    “They further stated they were also erroneously misinformed and brainwashed about Islam and the Nigerian military and the society generally.

    “The remorseful surrendered terrorists regretted their involvement in terrorism and marvelled at the courtesy and humane treatment accorded them by the military on surrendering,’’ the army spokesman said.

    He called on other remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists to follow suit and renounce the “devilish creed.’’
