As supplementary elections hold in some states of the federation, President Muhammadu Buhari has said he would not pressure the electorate to vote leaders they do not like.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Friday, the President dismissed insinuations that he was pressurising voters to elect candidates other than their preferred choices during the supplementary elections holding in 17 states of the country.
The supplementary elections are holding today, March 23, 2019.
The president denied ever giving instructions that people should vote particular candidates assuring that he would work with elected representatives of the people irrespective of the political party to which they belonged.
He also assured that he would work in the best interest of the country and democracy.
Buhari urged voters to come out and vote in the supplementary elections, saying ‘‘these elections are no less important than others before them.’’

He also appealed to them to vote for the candidates they were convinced would deliver on promises because “it is your constitutionally guaranteed democratic rights.
The President also called on the Independent National Electoral commission, INEC, and security agencies to ensure that the supplementary elections were conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law and constitution.
Buhari thanked voters for returning him for a second term in office, saying he would never forget their sacrifices in defying harsh weather conditions to vote for him and promised not to let them down.
