A Jos Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama on Monday sentenced one Shedrack Wilson, a 22-year-old student, to one year imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone valued at N108,000.

The presiding Judge, Mr Daniel Damulak, handed down the sentence after the convict pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of theft and begged the court for leniency.

Damulak, however, gave the convict an option of N20,000 fine.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gowkat, had told the court that the case was reported at the A Division Police station, Jos, on January 31, by one Joseph Okopi.

“The complainant claimed that on the said date, the accused person, Shedrack Wilson, a student, who resides at Gada Biu, dipped his hand into his (complainant’s) parked car and picked an IPhone 6 valued at N108,000.

The complainant further said that he raised an alarm which attracted others that chased and apprehended the accused person.

The police prosecutor further told the court that during police investigation, the accused person pleaded guilty to the crime.

“The offence contravened section 272 of the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria,” Gowkat stated.(NAN)
