Nigerian governors have expressed their support for the call for the creation of State Police in order to solve the problem of insecurity in the country.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and Governor of Zamfara State, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, spoke on behalf of his colleagues on Monday in Abuja.
Yari, however, suggested that the introduction should be in stages in view of the financial burden that goes with it.
Their position of the governors is the same as that of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Osinbajo, speaking during the opening of a two-day security summit organised by the Senate in Abuja last week said the creation of state police would solve the problem of insecurity in the country.
He said a centralised police system like the one the country currently ran would not be effective.
He however said the current system could still be made helped if the Nigeria Police Force was strengthened.
Besides, he said, the population of the police needed to be increased to tripple the current one.
His words: “We cannot realistically police a country the size of Nigeria centrally from Abuja.
“As a people any killing undermines the security of the state.’’
Giving the assurance that government was not relenting on its efforts in ensuring security of lives and property, Osinbajo said some policy objectives had been prepared and needed to get legislative approval and cooperation of the judiciary.
