Qatar Foundation, UNICEF Begin Cash Transfer To Less-privileged In Kebbi

The Qatar Foundation in collaboration with UNICEF and Kebbi State Government has begun a Cash Transfer Programme to the less-privileged women for the education of children.
Mr. Issa Umar, State Project Coordinator for Qatar Foundation, made the disclosure while speaking with newsmen on Saturday in Birnin Kebbi.
Issa, who was represented by Alhaji Muhammadu Magawata-Aliero, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, said the programme would reduce poverty and empower women.
He added that the scheme, which is undertaken in nine local government areas of the state, was another way to assist the less-privileged and reduce poverty amongst them.

“The targeted beneficiaries of the programme will be children from six to 11 years who are still in primary school.
“The Cash Transfer Programme was initiated by the Qatar Foundation in collaboration with UNICEF to promote education in some Northern States and has actually made a significant impact on child enrollment.
“Benefiting mothers will receive N8,000 per child, and some women have two to three children which is enough for them to start business that will empower them. ”
One of the beneficiaries, Fatima Issa from Kawan Baga in Danko-Wasagu Local Government, said she had two children enrolled in primary school under the programme.
“I collected for my two children which I used to support my rice farm, I have done the harvest and it was through this money.
“I am happy with the programme and my children are attending school,” Issa said.
In a related development, the UNICEF in collaboration with Kebbi Government has commenced the second phase of e-learning programme for primary and secondary school children in the state.
Mr. Suleiman Abubakar-Wasagu, Director, Planing and Research, Ministry of Education, disclosed this to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi.
He said the programme, known as Educate A Child (EAC) and started during the COVID-19, was aimed at educating children during and after the pandemic.
He explained that the programme was sustained in order to achieve the same objectives of giving the child the requisite knowledge in spite of the pandemic.
“We have just started this second phase now because since the schools have resumed we then changed our time table from morning to evening period,” he said.
He said that the programme was being run through the Kebbi Television (KEBTV), Kebbi Radio, Vision FM, Radio Nigeria, Equity TV and Zuru Radio station.
He explained that the UNICEF/EAC also sponsored the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education to print books for Literacy and Numeracy for the learners in the state.
