The Kano State Police Command on Monday said it arrested former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, for making inciting statements capable of stoking violence in his home state.

Mr. Lamido was arrested, Sunday morning from his home in Sharada area of Kano city and taken to the Zone One Command of the Nigeria Police.

But the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Samba Sokoto, told journalists the former governor was arrested for committing an offence contrary to the provisions of Section 114 of the Penal Code Laws of the Federation.

Mr. Sokoto said the former governor will be charged to court after investigations into his alleged crime were concluded.

The police spokesperson said the arrest of the former governor followed a petition by the Jigawa State Government dated April 27.

He said the state government accused Mr. Lamido directing his supporters to resort to violence if the planned local government election in the state on July 1, does not favour them.

Mr. Sokoto said the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the zone, Kayode Aderanti, is in charge of the investigation.

The police spokesperson said Kayode Aderanti, the assistant inspector general of police in charge of the Kano Zone One, promised to be just in the conduct of the investigations.
