A policeman, Hussain Jamaiz, was shot dead by a gang of armed robbers in Owerri, Imo State on Frioday.
Jamaiz was shot when he accompanied a Chinese to whom he was attached, to a commercial bank located on Item Street, Owerri, by the orderly and his driver.
The Chinese works for the state government.
The Chinese was said to have withdrawn the sum of N10 million from the bank and got out through the back gate when he was accosted by the robbers who shot sporadically into the air to scare away passers-by.
According to the Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Chris Ezike, the police orderly had moved to stop the robbers when he was shot in the neck region.
To Chinese was also shot on the leg before carting away the money he had withdrawn from the bank and thereafter zoomed off in their Toyota Camry car.
Ezike said the driver of the expatriate attempted conveying the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment only to run into a gridlock along Okigwe Road in front of Owerri Prisons.
Ezike further disclosed that the driver thereafter used the one-way lane but collided with an on- coming vehicle.
The injured cop gave up the ghost at the accident scene, he told our correspondent on the telephone.
The CP disclosed that the police had launched a manhunt for the fleeing robbers while the wounded Chinese and the passengers in the other vehicle were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
