The strike embarked upon by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) who are operating under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) has started having its effect.
Already, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State has postponed its convocation scheduled to start December 13.
The postponement was announced in a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, on Wednesday.
The statement reads: “Due to unforeseen development occasioned by the ongoing national strike action of the non-teaching staff unions of universities, it has become imperative for the authorities of the OAU to postpone our 43rd convocation.

“The non-definite date for the suspension of the strike action has made the suspension of the 43rd convocation of the university an unavoidable alternative.
“University management regrets any inconveniences that the postponement might have caused the general public, most especially our invited guests, the graduating students, their parents and guardians, friends and well wishers, the alumni, lovers of Great Ife and all other stakeholders.”
The workers embarked on a strike following the sharing formula of the N23 billion released by the government for the settlement of earned allowances.
In the sharing formula, non-academic staff were allocated 11 per cent of the N23 billion as against 89 per cent for academic staff in the universities.
The strike had drawn the reaction of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige who stated that the federal government had fulfilled the agreement reached with the non-academic staff of federal universities on September 20.
He said the government had also fully complied with the implementation timelines of the agreement.
