Niger Aviatrix, a Nigeria-based group of female pilots, has counselled school girls to pursue a career in piloting as part of activities to mark this year’s International Girl Child Day.
Coordinator of the Group, Ryankeng Gidado, gave the encouragement on Thursday while leading a group of 20 girls on a tour of the Kaduna International Airport.
“The event is the first of it’s kind and it is aimed at encouraging the girl child to study any career of their choice, as long as they are capable and determined.
“I want to dismiss the perceptions and difficulties people attribute to piloting career, hence making it look like a career only meant for the males.

“Globally, there are only 5% of female pilots and it’s not a good number. So, we are giving these girls the opportunity to interact with us, share our challenges and success stories with them in order to encourage them,” Gidado explained.
She urged the girls to study hard and become pilots too, in spite of the challenges, because with hard work and dedication, they could attain any height in their aspirations.
Miss Rachel Haruna, one of the school girls expressed delight for being part of the event which, according to her, gave her the opportunity to fly in an aircraft for the first time in her life.
She promised to study hard to also become a pilot so as to inspire other girls in future.
The school girls, who were hosted at the Kaduna International airport, were shown different kinds of aircraft, the airport runways and were also flown in a small aircraft by the female pilots. (NAN)
