The fitness revolution in Nigeria for the past few years has reached an all time high. There is so much awareness and people aren’t taking their fitness lightly at all.
The boom has also seen a rise in all sorts of diets, exercise programmes, and all the people claiming to be experts in one field or the other. In this regard, it’s good to be careful. Not all experts are experts. Be sure to do your research before you decide which trainer/exercise programme/Diet plan you want to go with.
Here’s a look at some of the things that are currently trending in Nigeria.
Virtual Training – In the past what was accepted was the conventional method. You find a gym, get a trainer to work with you there or at home sometimes. Now that method still works but you see a lot of online training going on. Most Fitness personnel are making tons of money working with clients online. So the craze these days is finding an online trainer, join her team where he or she sends you materials to help and guide you. In some cases you get added to an online support group as well for accountability. This method is working and getting lots of results. The key, however, is making sure you find a QUALIFIED person, not just someone who is doing ‘copy and paste’. Also with this be sure you are ready to stick to the programme. Don’t cheat on the programme and rules and expect to see results!
Smoothies – This has gotten a new look and has become the craze. The good thing about it is that this has opened up a lot of employment opportunities. Smoothie spots are opening all over the place especially in bigger cities like Lagos. People are becoming more aware of choosing this as a healthy option as opposed to Soda and others. The slight problem this brings is this : Most people are not entirely educated on the fact that just ‘drinking’ smoothies is not enough. Also what is the sweet fruit ratio in these drinks? You may just be taking in more and more sugar all in the name of smoothies! Always ensure your favorite smoothie spot adds more vegetables to your smoothie than fruits. In other words, go for the options that have more of vegetables in it when ordering.

Healthy Food spots and options – With the general acceptance of the fitness movement, more and more food spots are introducing the healthy meal options in their menus. These days it’s a bit easier to get meals that fit within your weight loss/fitness goals. New businesses are also springing up that offer deliveries of healthy meals as well. This movement is really creating job opportunities in several fields. The expense which was usually the main excuse of people not to eat healthy is also more manageable. As it becomes mainstream to eat healthy, these foods are getting more accessible. The method of preparing healthy options of already existing meals also makes this more affordable to the everyday person. It will still probably cost you a little bit more and the way to curtail this is to learn (and it’s pretty easy) how to prepare your meals yourself.
Waist Trainers – Some years ago, this became the in thing. These days it’s still going strong except now they’ve modified it. There was a lot of conversation about the health ramifications of this and it’s still going on till. There are ‘waist cinchers’ for men as well. The whole idea is that wearing them while working out makes you sweat and lose fat in the area. A lot of discussion is going on whether this is true or not.
The Keto diet – I can categorically say almost everyone has heard of this latest fad. The Keto diet! There are Facebook groups where the plans are shared and a lot to be found online as well. Most women and indeed men are opting for this fad because it focuses on food and you can lose weight with little to no exercise if you follow the plan. The thing with this, however, is there’s still a lot of science that indicates it is not exactly healthy to the body in the long run. Be sure to do your research thoroughly before you embark on it. If you like the easy way out, where you don’t have to focus on exercising and don’t care about the possible side effects then this is the craze for you.
These are just a few of the fads/craze currently rocking the Fitness world. Which one are you doing? Which one appeals to you? Let us know in the comment section as well as share with others some that may have not been mentioned here. Thanks!
