Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had on June 6, 2018, declared June 12, as the new Democracy Day.

Recall also that the Senate last week passed the Public Holiday Act Amendment Bill recognising June 12 as Democracy Day.

On June 12, 1993, Nigeria held what has been adjudged as the freest elections, and the late Moshood Abiola was acclaimed winner of the presidential election.

The election was, however, annulled by the military regime of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

Abiola, consequently died in the course of the fight to reclaim his mandate.
