The explosion in a former market on the outskirts of Enugu was caused by a battery spark.
The Police Command in Enugu State made this known on Wednesday in a statement by its spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu.
Although he said further investigations were ongoing, he explained that a heavy-duty battery negative and positive in the scrap had contact with metal scrap and led to the explosion.
His words: “The preliminary investigations have revealed that there was a fire contact with the battery at the scrap site of the former market.’’
It would be recalled that on Monday, there was an explosion at the scrap section of a former New Artisan Market on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Road on the outskirts of Enugu.
The police command dispatched its Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD) to the scene to ensure safety of lives and property.
