COVID-19: Pots Of Rice, Soup Stolen In Ebonyi As Hunger Bites

Incidents of crime have risen in Ebonyi State following harsh effects of measures put in place to forestall spread of Coronavirus in the state.

The strict measures put in place by the state government, including ban on commercial motorcycle operators, tend to have impoverished the residents.

Ebonyi state Police Command on Saturday admitted that there had been an upsurge in crime in the state as a result of the lockdown and ban on commercial motorcycles in the state.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Loveth Odah, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), while briefing journalists, said the command had beefed up security in the state, even as he assured on their preparedness to protect and arrest anyone found terrorising the people.

She said: “We received report of a stolen pot of soup and Jollof rice. A woman was cooking and went inside to take something and on coming out, her pot of soup was stolen and this shows that there is hunger in the land.

“People in Ebonyi don’t believe that COVID-19 is real and some residents in the rural areas are even celebrating it.”
