Cancers are increasingly becoming a major source of ill health and death all over the world.
In Nigeria, it is responsible for over hundreds of thousands of deaths yearly according to World health Organization.
The commonest type affecting women in Nigeria are Breast cancer and Cervical cancer. Being Breast aware can help reduce the rate at which people present late to the hospital , a stage at which very little can be done to help the individual.
Being breast aware involves knowing your breast and the signs to look out for. It doesn’t require any special skill or training, all it takes is TLC:

1. T- touch your breasts to see if you can feel anything unusual like lumps. 2. L- look at your breasts to see if there are any changes in shape or texture.
3. C- check for anything unusual like abnormal discharge from the nipples.
Other factors, which can contribute to a person having breast cancer include:
Early age at first menstruation, obesity, taking alcohol, not having children, having someone in the family that has breast cancer, lack of exercise. Breast cancer can be prevented and if picked up early, the chances of survival are increased.
