“This is not just a sequel, it’s a saga. And it’s a family saga. It will be compelling on its own, but it will also be extremely compelling to return to those characters and to see how they’ve evolved, he said, when asked about the movie by The Hollywood Reporter.

Avatar 2 is set to hit the movie theaters on December 16.

Avatar is the story of Jake, a marine who is assisting a company mining the moon Pandora for a precious mineral known as unobtanium. A nearby tribe of the indigenous Na’vi are keeping the company from expanding the mines.

Jake is tasked with controlling a genetically engineered Na’vi body known as an Avatar to interact and ultimately convince the tribe to work with the company. But the more Jake learns about the Na’vi and their culture, along with getting closer to Neytiri, a Na’vi the more sinister he sees the company.

He finds himself faced with an ultimatum when a revolution starts, defending his old people, or the new people that embraced him.
