Africa Cup of Nations debutants, Madagascar on Sunday beat DR Congo 4-2 on penalties after playing a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation time.

They have therefore secured a spot in the quarter-finals.

Madagascar took the lead after Ibrahim Amada’s superb 20-yard strike and Cedric Bakambu equalised with a header for DR Congo.

Faneva Andriatsima of The Indian Ocean islanders restored the lead with a header before Chancel Mbemba equalised again for DR Congo at the 90th-minute, thereby forcing an extra-time.

The extra 30 minutes time yielded no goals and set both teams for a penalty-shootout where Madagascar scored all their penalties.

In contrast, DR Congo missed two penalties. Everton’s winger, Yannick Bolasie’s attempt which went over the bar.

Madagascar will go on to play against Ghana or Tunisia in Cairo on Thursday, July, 11, in one of the quarter-final matches.
