The football great has launched a youth tournament for footballers in his childhood town as he continues giving back to the grassroots.

In his quest to unearth more soccer greats for the country, Nigeria and Arsenal football legend Nwankwo has kicked off his maiden football competition ‘Kanu Super Six’ at his sports centre in Owerri, Imo state.

The eight-day championship will feature tertiary institutions from the south eastern part of Nigeria – with the ambition of discovering and grooming future football stars.

“I always feel delighted giving back to the society,” Kanu told Goal.

“With Kanu Super Six competition, I intend to help the country discover more football stars, and will do everything possible to ensure they play to the highest level where they can showcase their talents to the world.”

Kanu enjoyed a fruitful football career which spanned over two decades. Aside winning the Uefa Champions League, the English FA Cup and Olympic football gold medal, he was named African Player of the Year twice before hanging his boot after captaining the Super Eagles to the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.
